Used in the physical sense, the word "Leverage" means an assisted advantage. As a verb, "to leverage" means to gain an advantage through the use of a tool. For example, you can more easily lift a heavy object with a lever than you can lift it unaided.

Leverage is commonly used everyday in the world of finance. When used in the financial area, Leverage is described as the use of borrowed money to make an investment and the return on that investment.

All the major international banks and financial institutions use Leverage in their day-to-day operations. All banks have limited capital. Instead of lending out their own capital, and thus limiting both the amount of money they can lend because of regulatory requirements and restrictions and the number and type of their business activities, Banks take deposits from customers at say 3% and lend these deposits to borrowers at a markup, say 5%. Since they are lending more money than they have in capital, they thus produce a higher return on equity (ROE).

� Step 5 - Collect your payment from the winning bidder in the same account you specified in Step 4 above;
� Step 6 - As soon as the auction is completed and payment received, order and pay immediately for the merchandise from the Drop-shipper using the same account where you received the payment from the seller. Some Drop-shippers prefer to charge a valid credit card. Some prefer PayPal;
� Step 7 - Repeat this exercise as many times as you want;

Tip! The majority of buyers on eBay prefer to pay for their purchase via PayPal. That is why it is vital for you to accept this method of payment.

Let us Summarise:
� Day 1: List your auction items;
� Day 7: Receive payment in the account specified above at the end of your 7 day auction listing. If your listing is for 3,or 5 days you will receive payment at the end of the 3 or 5 day listing;
� Day 8: Order and Pay for the item sold. The Drop-shipper dispatches item directly to the Buyer;
� Day 15: Receive eBay Listing Fees Invoice;
� Day 22: eBay listing Fees debited to Credit Card Account;
� Day 23: You have surplus funds (the profit) in your account;

Thus you have successfully used Financial Leverage to generate profits on eBay. You have not used any of your own money or capital. Instead you have used your credit status with your credit card company:

You received full payment for the item BEFORE you paid the drop-shipper for the item and BEFORE you received and paid the eBay commissions invoice.

The downside risk is that, if your auction item does not sell, you still have to pay the eBay listing fees. BUT this risk is exactly the same if you had purchased and paid for the item in advance using your own money. Once you have your computer equipment, you will need to plug your modem into a telephone line. Next, you will need to open an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) - a company that provides connections to the Internet, usually for a monthly fee. Most telephone companies provide this service. Also you may be able to find an ISP in your local area.

The final element required is software called a Web browser which enables you to find and read the information on the Web. The more popular web browsers are provided by Microsoft (Internet Explorer) and Netscape Navigator and are usually installed free of charge when you buy a computer. Of course, once set up you can always browse or surf on the Internet, establish what other browsers are available and download the browser you feel more comfortable with.

Tip! Listing a catalog of items that a seller offers for sale is forbidden. The only catalogs legally sold on eBay are collectible kinds, such as an old Sears Roebuck or Montgomery Wards catalog that is memorabilia and doesn't offer current merchandise for sale.

Since you are probably planning to make eBay auctions a part-time or full-time income generator you will need an adequate computer system. If money is no object then you can get the latest state of the art system. However if your start-up budget is limited you should get the basic minimum recommended hardware and software. Zipping & Unzipping Files - Zipping is a standardized way of shrinking data files into smaller kilobytes or megabytes thus saving on disk space. If you plan to send or receive data files via eMail or via file transfer on the Internet and if you plan to buy or sell eBooks, software or any product which can be delivered digitally or by file transfer you will need to know how to Zip and Unzip Files.

I wish I had had the foresight to buy some of their stock, but that's another story. What I do get a kick out of is the fact that I can buy and sell and do business with people all over the world from my home computer. Who would have thought that would even be possible for the average person as recently as ten or fifteen years ago? The way that eBay is set up by categories and the search engine that is used to help you find items is just incredible. You will stumble on things that you want without even directly looking for them.

Tip! Seek advice and learn as much as you can before you start. Use the eBay Store Sellers Board - a lively forum where you can pick up tips and ask questions.

As far as doing business through eBay, they have made it super easy. You don't even have to worry about currency exchange, or shopping carts or any of the other issues normally associated with e-commerce. If you have an email address and a Paypal account you are in business.

If you are looking for old or rare items eBay is like a giant treasure chest and sometimes if you are lucky and very attentive you can find really good deals on stuff that is truly valuable.

Now, on the other side of the coin we need to take a look at some of the negative aspects just so you have the full picture of doing business on eBay. I wouldn't want to leave you thinking that everything was totally perfect.

If you are going to do business in eBay, one of the things you must be aware of is shipping costs. If you are looking at buying a large item from overseas, let me stop you before you even get started.

International shipping costs are outrageous, which is why most eBay sellers in the United States will only sell to and ship in the U.S. and Canada. You could buy a lamp for $1 and pay $75 for it to be shipped!

Another issue that I have to warn you about is that there are tons of people who prowl around eBay that are crooked. They are fraudsters who will send thousands of emails to people claiming they bought an item and will demand payment or threaten to report you. I get this garbage everyday. Just be aware that they are there. You also have the people who place items up for sale that are non existent or not what they claim them to be. This is why it pays to only do business with people who have a long history of good feedback ratings.

At some point while searching for advertising opportunities I ran across a website that offered advertising within an ezine ad coop. The focus of the ad coop was home business related - a perfect fit for my product. My original plan was to do some focused ezine advertising but when I discovered I could have my ad placed in dozens of ezines I figured this would be a great deal. I must admit I was slightly suspicious when I noticed that they required me to subscribe to each newsletter but after another hour of research it was clear that all ezine ad coops had this requirement. Well, I thought, it does make sense that I should be a subscriber since then I will be able to verify that they actually run my ad.

The Concept Behind the Ezine Advertising Coop

The general idea behind an ezine advertising cooperative depends on your perspective. For ezine publishers, membership in an advertising cooperative is a great way to build their newsletter membership. Remember, in order to run the ad I had to become a subscriber to a bunch of ezines. The more subscribers a newsletter has, the larger the potential financial return on marketing activity and these guys are all about marketing.

From the advertiser's perspective, the value proposition is that for a minimal cost the advertiser can get his message in front of hundreds of thousands or even millions of people. Ideally, the coop will be focused on a niche that the advertiser's product fits into but this doesn't always have to be the case. Bottom line - the cost per pair of eyeballs appears to be very, very low.

My Campaign Begins

The sum required was minor - around $30. Not a big deal considering my ad would run in dozens of ezines with a total combined readership of well over one million people. So, although I was suspicious of the subscribing requirement, I figured I couldn't lose on the deal. Look, I thought, if only one person purchases my software I have paid for the ad and put $70 in the bank (before taxes.) It seemed to be a very favorable value proposition.

So, in a great flurry of activity I created an ad, revised it, threw it out, and created another! I worked feverishly to perfect my ad. Night became day, day became night and finally, I was done. Here is what I ran -

I will grant that it's a little cheesy but those $$ titles really pull clicks. My thinking was that since the ad cost was limited to my initial outlay, I could afford to pull all potential traffic - even unqualified traffic. My reasoning behind such a generic ad approach was that I felt it would be very challenging to pull any traffic if my ad referenced eBay Web Services and PHP. These words and concepts are alien to many people. I planned to use my sales letter to convert people with little technical sophistication. My approach and my ad copy was different when I entered the world of pay-per-click but that is the topic of another installment.

Next, I went to the website that offered the ezine ad coop service, filled out the form, and PayPal transferred the cash to the owner of the coop. I quickly received a response from my new ad agency and it had some very interesting information contained within it. I had to subscribe myself to over a dozen of the ezines. But it wasn't simple. Yahoo Groups hosted one ezine, several required I send emails to listserv machines, and in several cases I had to go to websites and fill out a form.

Ezine Ad Coop Campaigns Are Hard Work

One hour later I was regretting my decision to forego the slightly more expensive option of advertising without the need to become a subscriber to all those newsletters, but that was only the beginning of my regrets. I next had to confirm my subscription to various newsletters - double opt-in and all that. One of the ezines actually had me wade through 15 pages of surveys and "would you be interested in this offer" pages before finally confirming my subscription. I then found that the ezine had been dormant for seven months!

Tip! Host your own pictures. By hosting your own pictures, you will save money, and, more importantly, be able to use as many pictures as you need to adequately show eBay bidders your item.

Finally, after confirming that I was successfully subscribed to all the ezines, I sat back and let out a sigh of relief. In the coming days about half of the ezine owners sent me notes informing me when my ad would run. The ad runs were spread across the next six weeks.

Am I The Advertiser?

With the ezine ad coop business behind me, I returned to my marketing research with the revised thought that if only two sales resulted from the goat rodeo I had experienced I would be satisfied. Within a few days the newsletters started arriving, and not just newsletters but plenty of highly valued and very important solo ads that were filled with text like this:

They have to insert those periods or the SPAM filters will flag the messages every time. Why? Because the message is SPAM! Okay, I understand that SPAM filters are sensitive and sometimes you need to insert a period or two to lower the SPAM Assassin score of your broadcast message but these solo ads had a punctuation density so high that the messages approach being unreadable; I began to think I was reading Morse code.

Tip! The majority of buyers on eBay prefer to pay for their purchase via PayPal. That is why it is vital for you to accept this method of payment.

For the uninitiated, a solo ad is an advertisement that is sent in a single email without other newsletter content to subscribers of a newsletter. Generally this would be considered SPAM but the subscriber agreement you accept for these types of ezines contain language stating that you agree to receive such communications. I like to call it opt-in SPAM.

It continued like that for six long weeks. They were easily six of the most painful weeks I have ever lived. It was interesting to note that many of the ezines were not delivered via email. The list owner would instead simply send a broadcast message informing me that the newsletter could be viewed on their website. Interesting thing though, the solo ads were delivered directly into *my* mailbox.

eZine Advertising Coop Campaign Results

The result of my ezine advertising campaign was 89 referrals from various newsletters in the cooperative to my ezine destination URL. I know because I created a specific URL with redirection code so I could track the click-through performance of the campaign. While I have no way of tracking each individual source since some newsletters were delivered via email, I did know the aggregate results and 89 click-throughs was not the level of success I had expected. More importantly, 89 click-throughs and zero sales.

The campaign was an unmitigated disaster. Of course the deck was stacked against me from the start. I quickly noticed that 95% of the ezine publishers had dozens of ads in each newsletter issue. There was generally a top, middle, and bottom sponsor ad and these ads were generally demarcated very well and they probably received decent response too but they were for "their" advertisers. I generally found my ad near the bottom of their newsletters in a special section for the ad coop. In many cases, the newsletter belonged to multiple ad coops so there might be 40 ads and five coop sections in each issue! The slickest trick I found was the publisher that actually had a special edition of his newsletter filled with ads. Yes, filled with ads. Sure he also threw in a syndicated article that he grabbed from one of the article sites but it was rather clear that his normal readers ignored the "special edition" of his newsletter each week. I know I would. If Adsense has taught us anything it's that ads are most effective when they are integrated into the text on a page. These guys segregate ads so their subscribers don't need to bother ignoring them within the main body of their newsletters.

Worse though was the quality of many of the ezines. The only original authorship in some of these ezines was the editorial and by the time I made it two or three sentences into that it became obvious why! If you believe we live in the age of universal literacy you are wrong. It wasn't all bad though. Several of the newsletters actually provided some decent content but more often than not content came in the form of articles culled from the article sites. I don't have a problem with article sites but I expect a newsletter to provide significant original value.

Lessons Learned

I did learn some things though. I know that a HYIP (High Yield
Investment Program) is a really cool way to turn $10 into $20. I found that I really needed an e-gold account if I wanted to achieve financial freedom. I learned that the government *doesn't* want me to know about the secret banking system, that my money was not at risk even though they didn't have FDIC insurance, and that I could truly take part in a risk-free investment that would double my money and pay me interest every single hour of the day. I learned that people apparently fall for this crap.

I learned that I could buy "make money at home" leads by the thousands, import them into my autoresponder, and then SPAM these leads. Apparently it's okay though because the nice folks on the list I have purchased filled out a survey and expressed an interest in making money from home. I learned that people just don't understand what double opt-in means.

But most important of all, I learned that ezine ad coops exist for one reason only - to dupe people into joining a bunch of marginal ezines so they can market their crap to you. I discovered that the insult is that much more powerful because I gave them $30 for the privilege of being assaulted day after day with SPAM in the form of solo ads and substandard newsletter content. I suppose if you need to market your new HYIP, sell some red hot "work at home" leads, or push your latest get-rich-quick scheme you will find kindred souls in some of the ezine ad cooperatives operating today but if you need to market a legitimate, quality product you should look elsewhere.

Final Conclusion

If you want to advertise in ezines, locate ezines in your niche, subscribe, and once you are sure that they publish to high standards, toss them a couple of bucks. Ask the publisher what his subscriber count is. Inquire as to click-through rates on previous ads. You also need to insure you know where your ad will be published within the newsletter and when it will be published.

Don't bother with ezine ad coops especially when their home page feels like a trip back to 1999.

IRS Won't Forgive Taxes Owed by eBay, Amazon 'Hobby' Sellers

QUESTION: I'm a part-time "hobby" seller of used books on Amazon and eBay. Do I need to pay income tax on the sales I had last year?

ANSWER: Yes, you are required to pay federal income tax and self-employment tax on your net income from selling used books online, whether you sold them on Amazon, eBay, Half.com, ABE, Alibris, or any other venue.

Tip! Cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco or coupons for such items are not permitted on eBay.com.

Since you don't have an employer reporting your bookselling income and withholding a portion for taxes, you must inform the IRS about it yourself. It makes no difference that you consider your bookselling a "hobby." If you're making a profit, the IRS considers it a business, and wants its cut.

I'm assuming you won't be incorporating your business, so you'll need to report your bookselling income as a "sole proprietorship" on the long tax form, IRS Form 1040, Schedule C, "Profit or Loss From Business."

You can report your self-employed income using the personal editions of TurboTax or TaxCut software. These programs can save you lots of time, since they give instructions in plain English instead of the bewildering jargon of IRS instruction manuals.

With self-employed income, you're supposed to estimate your tax obligation during the year, and make quarterly payments on your profits, submitted with Form 1040-ES, by April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following calendar year. Since you didn't do this during 2005, you may owe a penalty for late tax payments. If you were expecting a tax refund this year, it may be smaller than you thought.

For next year, I'd recommend you have a separate checking account to track expenses and income from your bookselling. If your bank enables you to download your transactions into Quicken or another personal-finance program, you can automatically categorize expenses such as "postage," etc., in Quicken. And next year you can transfer this same data into your tax-prep software. This will greatly lessen your bookeeping chores next year, and also give you a handy tool for examining the performance of your book business.

Keep in mind that what you are really selling is your log in, password, and secret question answer. None of these items are, or could be copyrighted by Blizzard, nor do they violate any intellectual property laws. The only legal recourse Blizzard would have against anyone selling this information, would be to cancel the account. It is highly unlikely that Blizzard could, or would do so. They are in business to make money, and don't really care where it comes from. Again, don't bother with the disclaimer, it's a waste of time, and won't prevent your auction from being cancelled.

If you have an account that is a few days old with zero feedback, don't get your hopes up. You'll just be getting a fraction of what you would have received had you taken the time to purchase some feedback or get verified. Basically, you are asking someone to electronically send you money based on a few screen shots, or unverifiable claims. Would you send someone hundreds if their ebay account was 24 hours old? Most people would rather spend more on a lesser account than take the risk.

Once your eBay account allows you to use the buy it now, one day auction, and best offer features, you can use any of the following combinations to max out your purchase price, and, prevent Blizzard from canceling your auction. I suggest the following: three day buy it now with the best offer feature. This does three things; first it gives the buyer a sense of urgency due to time limits, it sets the price bar, and it allows you take offers below your buy out price. You'll either get an offer you want, a buyout, or the auction will expire, and you relist it. Unless you have to have the money in a rush, be patient. You may need to relist your auction several times, but if it means getting a few hundred more for your account, it's worth the extra expense.

Another strategy is to use one day auctions. This allows for bids, but the 24 hour time limit prevents Blizzard from canceling your auction. Their VeRO request needs to be filed and processed, and by that time your auction is over. The upside to one day auctions is the frequency you can relist them with; every 24 hours. Ebay's default search feature shows auctions in the order in which they are ending, soonest first. This means your auctions will constantly be at the top of the list, and a buyer must react instantly to get your account.

I do not recommend using the seven or ten day auction. This provides Blizzard with ample opportunity to file a VeRO complaint, and get your auction cancelled. Rest assured, Blizzard's intent is to wait until you have bidders and make everyone angry by getting the auction canceled.

Passing The CCNA and CCNP: Home Lab Shopping On Ebay

Whether you're just getting ideas for your Cisco home lab or adding to your existing lab, ebay is a great place to get ideas for your lab as well as pick up some great bargains.

Of course, the internet being what it is, there are always going to be a few people looking to take your money while shipping you inferior merchandise, or worse, no merchandise at all. While these "dealers" are in the minority, you still need to be careful when purchasing Cisco equipment on ebay. In this article, I'll give you several tips on browsing ebay ads for home lab ideas, and a few things to look out for when purchasing equipment on ebay.

For those of you just starting your Cisco certification pursuit, the idea of purchasing a home lab kit -- a set of routers, switches, and perhaps some cables and study guides -- seems like a good idea. Instead of putting your lab together one piece at a time, these kits allow you to get a head start on your studies.

Tip! Host your own pictures. By hosting your own pictures, you will save money, and, more importantly, be able to use as many pictures as you need to adequately show eBay bidders your item.

One thing to watch out for in these kits is outdated equipment, or the inclusion of outdated study guides. Often, vendors will use these kits as a way to get rid of unwanted inventory.

The Cisco 1900 family of switches falls into this category. A recent search on ebay for "ccna lab" showed seven different CCNA lab kits that contained 1900 switches. The problem here is that the current CCNA exams do not test on the 1900 switches, which are menu-driven and do not have an IOS. You'll need to be well-versed with switches that do have an IOS, such as the 2950s.

The plus side here is that you will probably save money by using 1900 switches. If you're on a tight budget, having a 1900 switch is better than no switch at all. If at all possible, though, get a Cisco switch with an IOS.

Tip! You can find anything on eBay. When searching on eBay I suggest first doing a general search such as 'ionic breeze' and checking what the items are going for.

The cables and transceivers included with these kits are generally exactly what you need to set up that particular kit, and this can be very helpful to those CCNA candidates who are new to the various cables needed to physically configure a home lab. Just make sure you're not buying a kit with 10 transceivers (used on AUI ports) when you've only got two routers with Ethernet ports.

Watch out for kits that include outdated study guides. I've seen four-year-old CCNA books included with some kits. If you already have your study guides, feel free to ask the vendor how much the kit costs without the books.

That leads me to the most important point. Get to know the vendor before buying anything. Visit their website and check their ebay feedback. If buying from an individual as opposed to a reseller, find out what conditions the router or switch has been kept in, and make sure to define the terms under which they will accept returns. There's nothing wrong with buying equipment from someone who's selling their CCNA/CCNP/CCIE home lab, but just make sure you ask the right questions first. Professional resellers generally have their return policy right in their ebay ad; if they don't, ask for a copy.

Building your own CCNA and/or CCNP home lab is a little intimidating at first, but speaking as someone who has climbed the Cisco certification ladder from the CCNA to the CCIE, I can tell you that it is the best investment you can make in your career. Use a little caution, ask the right question, and soon you'll be leaving the world of "router simulators" behind - and you'll be developing your skills as a true professional should: On real Cisco routers and switches!
